Sleep Apnea: Explained

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that causes breathing to stop and start repeatedly during sleep. One of the causes of sleep apnea is the tongue and soft palate flopping back into the throat and closing the airway.

During sleep, the muscles in the body relax, including those in the tongue and soft palate. When these muscles relax too much, they can block the airway, causing breathing to become shallow or even stop briefly. This lack of oxygen can trigger the brain to briefly wake up and restart breathing, often resulting in loud snoring or gasping for air.

In severe cases, this cycle can occur hundreds of times per night, disrupting sleep and causing various health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

Quietnite Soft Palate Treatment

The Quietnite soft palate treatment is a revolutionary solution for individuals with disruptive snoring or sleep apnea. This non-invasive, outpatient procedure utilizes advanced laser technology to tighten the soft palate, resulting in increased airway space and improved breathing patterns during sleep.

Tongue-tie Release

The normal resting position of the tongue is up against the palate (behind the incisor). Tongue-tie, a condition where the frenum is abnormally short, results in the tongue's resting position on the floor of the mouth instead of the palate, obstructing the airway and causing sleep apnea. Releasing the tongue tie allows the tongue to reach the palate, preventing airway obstruction. Myofunctional therapy and frenectomy are required to strengthen and retain the tongue against the palate.

Tru Smile
  • Permits the full range of tongue movement

  • Improves the patient's speech

Oral Appliance Therapy

Oral appliance therapy is the use of a custom-fitted mouth guard that is designed to help modify wearers' jaw positioning and tooth alignment while sleeping. It offers an alternative to invasive surgical procedures that can come with a long list of risks. These mouthpieces are commonly prescribed for patients suffering from snoring or sleep apnea.
